Mobiles
Several countries, including the United Kingdom, now have more mobile phones than people. There are more than five hundred million active mobile phone accounts in China by 2007. Luxembourg has the highest mobile penetration rate in the world, at 164% in December 2001. In Hong Kong the penetration reached 139.8% of the population in July 2007. The total number of mobile phone subscribers in the world was 2.14 billion in 2005. The participants include reached 2.7 billion by the end of 2006 after information, and 3.3 billion in November 2007, also to a height of more than half the population of the planet. Approximately 80% of the world’s population enjoys mobile phone coverage in the year 2006. This number is expected to be 90% by the year 2010.
Currently, Africa has the highest growth rate of cellular subscribers in the world, its markets expand nearly twice as fast as the Asian markets. The availability of prepaid, or “pay as you go”, in which the participants are not committed to a long-term contract, has helped fuel this growth to a monumental scale in Africa as in other continents.
On a numerical basis, India is the largest growing market, adding about 6 million mobile phones per month. With 156.31 million mobile phones, the market penetration in the country is still low at 17.45%. India is expected to reach 500 million subscribers by the end of 2010.
There are three major technical standards for the current generation of mobile phones and networks, and the two most important standards for the next generation 3G phones and networks. All of Europe, Africa and many Asian countries have adopted a unified system, GSM, which is the only technology on all continents and in most countries, and covers about 74% of all subscribers in mobile networks. In many countries, such as the United States, Australia, Brazil, India, Japan and South Korea GSM cooperation with other internationally adopted standards such as CDMA and TDMA, and iDEN national standards as in the United States and Japan in the PDC. In the past five years, several dozen mobile operators (carriers) have abandoned nets on TDMA and CDMA technologies, switching to GSM.
By the third generation (3G) networks, also known as IMT-2000 networks, about three out of four networks are available on the W-CDMA (also known as UMTS) standard, which is generally regarded as the natural development path for GSM and TDMA networks. A quarter of 3G networks is on the CDMA2000 1x EV-DO. Some analysts include an earlier phase in the development of CDMA, CDMA2000 1x RTT, as 3G technology, but most experts standardization include only CDMA2000 1x EV-DO as a true 3G technology. Because of these differences in the interpretation of what 3G, there is a wide variety of subscriber counts. In June 2007, on the narrow definition, there are around 200 million subscribers on 3G networks. Using the more broad definition, the participants include the 3G mobile phone users is 475 million.
While some of the payment systems are “pay as you go” where conversation and bought time to a phone device on the Internet or in stores or ATMs, others are more traditional, where the bills are periodically review. Pay as you go (also known as “pre-paid”) were invented simultaneously in Portugal and Italy, and today more than half of all mobile subscriptions. USA, Canada, Japan and Finland are among the few countries left where most cell phones are still contracting.
